DAAD South Africa at the 116th DSJ Schulbasar
On Saturday, 30 May 2026, DAAD South Africa attended the 116th annual Schulbasar at the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ), one of Johannesburg’s most established celebrations of German culture and community.
With its origins dating back to 1905, the Schulbasar has grown into a much-loved annual tradition inspired by the famous Hamburger Dom fair. Over more than a century, the event has become a fixture on Johannesburg’s social calendar, welcoming thousands of visitors from the German community and the wider public for a day of culture, food, entertainment and family-friendly activities.
This year’s Schulbasar once again lived up to its reputation as “The Ultimate German Experience.” Visitors enjoyed traditional German food and delicacies, a wide variety of German beers, live music and performances, children’s activities, market stalls and a vibrant atmosphere that celebrated German heritage while bringing together people from diverse backgrounds.
As part of the German higher education and cultural landscape in South Africa, DAAD South Africa was pleased to be part of the day’s festivities alongside many of our longstanding partners and members of the German-South African community. Events such as the Schulbasar continue to showcase the strong cultural connections between South Africa and Germany and provide valuable opportunities for organisations, institutions and communities to connect in an informal setting.
