Celebrating International Mother Language Day with Goethe-Institut South Africa

In February, DAAD South Africa joined the Goethe-Institut South Africa in celebrating International Mother Language Day at their Johannesburg premises. The event brought together a vibrant mix of languages, cultures, and communities in recognition of linguistic diversity and its role in fostering dialogue and mutual understanding.
The programme featured a range of interactive and cultural activities, including a well-attended language “speed dating” session, live performances, and opportunities for participants to engage with different linguistic traditions. These moments created a dynamic space for exchange, highlighting the richness of multilingualism in South Africa and beyond.
DAAD South Africa was pleased to be part of the event, connecting with students, partners, and the broader public while sharing information on study and research opportunities in Germany. The informal setting allowed for meaningful conversations and strengthened engagement with prospective applicants interested in international academic pathways.
The event also reaffirmed the strong and ongoing collaboration between DAAD and the Goethe-Institut in South Africa. Through joint initiatives such as this, both organisations continue to promote language, culture, and academic exchange as key pillars of international cooperation.
