German Unity Day Reception and South African Heritage Day: Celebrating Shared Values and Cultural Exchange

October and September offered two meaningful opportunities for the DAAD Johannesburg Information Centre to reflect on the depth and dynamism of German–South African relations. Representing the DAAD at both the German Unity Day reception in Pretoria and the South African Heritage Day celebration at the University of the Witwatersrand, the team was reminded of the strong, people-centred foundations that continue to shape cooperation between the two countries.

On 7 October, the German Embassy in Pretoria hosted the annual German Unity Day celebration at the Ambassador’s Residence in Waterkloof. The reception, led by Ambassador Andreas Peschke, brought together partners and friends of Germany from across the diplomatic, academic and innovation communities. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Peschke reflected on the enduring partnership between Germany and South Africa, noting the parallels between Germany’s experience of coalition governance and South Africa’s current political moment. His thoughtful message underscored the value of dialogue, stability and shared progress-principles that have long guided the bilateral relationship.

The event provided a welcome opportunity to reconnect with longstanding partners, exchange insights on current developments, and acknowledge the important role that academic cooperation plays in strengthening ties between the two countries. The DAAD Johannesburg Information Centre was pleased to be represented at this significant occasion and extends sincere appreciation to Ambassador Peschke and his team for their warm hospitality and excellent organisation.

A week earlier, the DAAD team also joined the SLLM Language and Heritage Day at the University of the Witwatersrand, an annual celebration held in the spirit of South Africa’s Heritage Day. Hosted by the School of Literature, Language and Media, the event brought together staff and students to share food, cultural attire and the rich linguistic diversity that characterises both the school and the country. With many languages and cultural identities represented, the gathering offered a vivid reminder of the importance of inclusion, cultural exchange and mutual understanding-values deeply connected to the DAAD’s work in South Africa.

Together, the two events highlighted the breadth of German–South African engagement, from high-level diplomatic dialogue to grassroots cultural celebration. These moments continue to affirm the shared commitment of both countries to education, collaboration and the strengthening of bilateral relations.
