The DAAD Information Center Johannesburg has a unique function in that it provides information on funding, study and research opportunities in Germany, Africa and a select few African countries to both South Africans and Sub-Saharan Africans. South Africa and Africa's higher education landscapes are vibrant and ever-growing, increasingly producing global scientists and researchers. For South Africans


DAAD-NRF Joint In-Country Scholarship (In-Country)

As part of the In-Country Scholarship Programme, in which more than two dozen African universities and university networks participate and which annually supports hundreds of African postgraduates, DAAD in partnership with the National Research Foundation (NRF) offers scholarships for postgraduate studies on a Master and PhD level to South Africans at South African universities in any field of study. This scholarship is only open to South African citizens or Permanent South African Residency Holders.

With this scholarship, the scholarship holder can also elect to do a Short-Term Research Visit to Germany for 2 - 6 months!

The Call for Applications usually comes out in May out on the NRF website. Application is online through the NRF Online Submission System.

In-Region Programmes in other African countries

The DAAD awards Master and PhD scholarships at certain selected research centers and scientific networks all over Africa as part of its In-Region programme. The Master and PhD scholarships are thus in certain select fields of study that align with the center or scientific network in question's research field. The DAAD prizes the mobility of young African graduates between African countries.

With these scholarships, the scholarship holder can also elect to do a Short-Term Research Visit to Germany for 2 - 6 months!
